You've probably seen the bloodmobile often in various places around the community. We've all heard that giving blood is important, but do you know how important it actually is? I spoke with the Regional Director of Vitalant, Julie Eaton, and learned more details that I had to share with all of you! Giving blood is a small way to give back and if your child is 16 years or older you can take them with you to participate.
Facts to Know:
- Vitalant has been a part of the Lafayette community since 1952.
- Formerly known as United Blood Services, we rebranded as Vitalant in 2018 and became part of a national network of blood services providers.
- Every day Vitalant in Louisiana needs to collect approximately 250 blood donations to meet the needs of patients.
- The blood needed for patients in South Louisiana hospitals outpaces the amount of blood donated.
- We partner with over 700 blood drive host organizations. Together, we offer life-transforming opportunities to donors that change people’s lives.

- 3% population penetration rate: This means only 3% of the eligible population actually donates.
- South Louisiana’s ethnic diversity is ideal for identifying donors with rare blood types, especially to support sickle cell patients
- Vitalant services 23 hospitals in 21 South Louisiana Parishes.
