The Community NEEDS Your Blood

Facts on Why Giving Blood is a Necessity

May 19, 2022

You've probably seen the bloodmobile often in various places around the community. We've all heard that giving blood is important, but do you know how important it actually is? I spoke with the Regional Director of Vitalant, Julie Eaton, and learned more details that I had to share with all of you! Giving blood is a small way to give back and if your child is 16 years or older you can take them with you to participate.

Facts to Know:

  • Vitalant has been a part of the Lafayette community since 1952.
  • Formerly known as United Blood Services, we rebranded as Vitalant in 2018 and became part of a national network of blood services providers.
  • Every day Vitalant in Louisiana needs to collect approximately 250 blood donations to meet the needs of patients.
  • The blood needed for patients in South Louisiana hospitals outpaces the amount of blood donated.
  • We partner with over 700 blood drive host organizations. Together, we offer life-transforming opportunities to donors that change people’s lives.
  • Louisiana Donation Centers
    • Lafayette – 1503 Bertrand Drive
    • Baton Rouge – 8234 One Calais, the service road at I-10 & Essen
    • Morgan City – 1234 David Drive, Suite 102
  • South Louisiana Blood Donors
    • Eligible Donor Population: 739,549
    • Active Donor Base:  21,848
    • 3% population penetration rate: This means only 3% of the eligible population actually donates.
  • South Louisiana’s ethnic diversity is ideal for identifying donors with rare blood types, especially to support sickle cell patients
  • Vitalant services 23 hospitals in 21 South Louisiana Parishes.
